I created the "Living Flags" in 1994 after the Gulf War. This creation is one of six works that I have made using flags (and it will certainly not be the last one). Through this work of art I wanted to protest against any kind of war. I chanelled all my political and human convictions about war and violence into this creation. That is why I consider it to my most important statue since 1970, the year I started working as a sculptor. In this creation I used more than 200 arrows which are covered with flags. These flags symbolize the attacker and that attacker could be any country. The arrows penetrate the flags, choosing one at random, depending on the current political situation. I wanted to create the effect of flags penetrating the human body and passing from one side to the other, At the same time, the blue sky symbolizes peace while blood is dripping from under the arrows. In the centre of the creation the needless shedding of blood is shown.

' U n i t e d   E u r o p e '

created by Avi Kenan, 2004

Avi Kenan's unique creation illustrates his personal view of a new United Europe, which joins other Nations to a more prosper future, like the most recent unity of  new Nations joining the European Union, symbolising peace and prosperity.

The centre figure, placed in between parallel mirrors, is covered with 25 flags, symbolising the 25 nations of Europe which are all united as one. With his right hand on his heart, the figure gives us the impression of confidently singing a new United Hymn of peace.

The Mirror creates a 'parallel-duplication' effect which gives us a sensation of endless reflection of the main centre figure with an exact replication on a straight line. Each mirror has a window, from which we can observe 13 figures on the left and 12 figures on the right, which is ended with a question mark, instead of a figure. The question mark stands for who might be the next nation to join. All figures are identical but yet all individually covered with many small flags of Their own national flag, symbolising the identity of each and every nation.

Avi Kenan's message is that we are all part of one body, all human, and should head  united to one objective, World Peace.

Avi Kenan wishes today that his next creation on that similar topic would be about 'United World', without a question mark!

'United Europe' creation was Avi Kenan's topic for his Retrospective Exhibition at the European parliament, Brussel March 2004.
